Discovery Building: H.F. DeLuca Forum

Many of the roads and pathways of the Teejop (Four Lakes) region are built upon the trails of the Hoocąk (Ho-Chunk) people. Before European settlers arrived, the beauty and bounty of the lands and waters were loved and respected by the indigenous people. Janice Rice, Hoocąk elder, will share values, teachings, kinship, land ethics, and relationships that frame a Ho-Chunk world view. The presentation will include a PPT slide show, photos, a bibliography, and maps. The format will follow a lecture style, along with opportunities for small group interaction and audience participation. Attendees will receive material that will inspire them to develop their own lesson plans for the classroom and on field trips.

In this session, you will:

Receive a brief introduction to history and geography of the landscape.
Receive an introduction to land ethics, values & Hoocąk kinship system.
Engage in group work to identify key concepts for curriculum development.
